Not your mamma's boxed mix
Food with Roots Heirloom Cornbread Mix is rooted in the long history of corn and cornbread in Southern cooking. Indigenous peoples cultivated, milled and cooked corn for generations before European colonization. Corn later became an essential ingredient in the cooking traditions developed by enslaved Africans and their descendants throughout the South. Early preparations included ash cakes, hoe cakes and other corn based breads that helped shape what we know as Southern cornbread today.
Our mix carries that history forward through ingredients with their own story. We use Oregon grown red flint corn, a deeply flavorful heirloom variety, alongside Pacific Northwest wheat and buttermilk to create a cornbread that's savory, hearty and rooted in tradition.
We created this mix to make great Southern cornbread approachable at home without losing the character that makes it special. Add just a few simple ingredients and bake it in a cast iron skillet for a crisp crust and tender center.
